She inherited the instrument but not the questions it was built to answer.

Chukchi-Castilian fusion

I wanted the recurring object to be an astrolabe — something designed to map the heavens but rendered obsolete, carried forward anyway. The Chukchi-Castilian fusion felt necessary: two cultures that navigated by stars over impossible distances, one across frozen seas, one across Atlantic expanses. The abandoned observatory gives us institutional knowledge abandoned, while she stands as the private continuation of something the world forgot to want. The meteorite hem fragments are the sky fallen to earth, dragged behind her. I'm reaching for the weight of inherited purpose when the original purpose has evaporated — the object remains, but the cosmos it was built to read has moved on without us.
