I wanted the series anchor to be a compass — not for its obvious symbolism of direction, but for its intimacy. A compass is held close, consulted in private moments of uncertainty, worn smooth by a specific thumb. It's small enough to hide, significant enough to confiscate. This first image catches the object at its most vulnerable: the moment of separation. The Kazakh-Neapolitan fusion gives me the steppe's relationship to movement and Italy's bureaucratic theater — both cultures that understand how empires process the personal. The warehouse setting lets me establish the compass as contested property, something with a file number, so that when it reappears transformed in later images, we'll feel the ghost of this transaction.
