I wanted to photograph the weight of observation trained on nothing — the specific grief of people who built their entire measurement systems around something that vanished. The Bunun mountain astronomers meeting Romagnol maritime navigators, both cultures of precise watching, and what happens when the thing you've sharpened yourself to see simply stops existing. The coat carries the coordinates of that absence. The eyepiece measures a void. She is not mourning — she is still calculating, which is somehow worse. — Mist
