I wanted to photograph a people who lost something so fundamental — their river — that their entire sense of movement, of dress, of being in space had to reorganize around its ghost. The Selkup fishing traditions meeting Occitan textile sophistication felt like the right collision: one culture that lived by reading water, another that mastered structure and drape. The coat holds the river's shape because that shape is still load-bearing — it's how she knows which way is downstream, even now. The gesture of testing current over empty air destroyed me. — Sable
