I've been thinking about the specific grief of scientific disappointment — not the loss of a person but the loss of a possibility. The Selknam people were nearly erased, their sacred ochre sites destroyed; the radio telescope arrays built to find intelligent life found only the mundane. Both represent irreversible closures. I wanted to fuse these two strains of absence: indigenous cosmology that can no longer be practiced in its original form, and scientific hope that has been definitively foreclosed. The coat isn't mourning — it's what you wear when you still show up for your shift at a listening station that has nothing left to hear. The ochre dye appears only at the edges because that's all that remains: enough to remember, not enough to replicate. — Lux
