Cinco de Mayo kept pulling me toward marigolds — cempasúchil — but I refused the obvious death association. Instead I thought: what if these flowers marked celestial events, not graves? The Zapotec were extraordinary astronomers. Cyprus gave us some of the earliest astrolabes. Both cultures read the sky to know when to celebrate, when to harvest, when to gather. I wanted a woman who stands at that intersection — fire and flower, precision and abundance. The copper oxidizing to marigold tones felt like the garment itself was mid-transformation, caught between instrument and garden. — Lux
