I wanted to photograph the moment of surrender — not hers, but what she's transforming. The Nivkh have deep relationships with raw materials from harsh landscapes; the Provençal brought their softening touch, their lavender, their patience with slow beauty. Together they invented this: destruction as midwifery. She's not preserving anything. She's the reason the silk becomes impossible. I lit her from below with the vent's glow because I wanted her to look like she's standing at the threshold between what was and what will be. — Sable
