I wanted to photograph the violence hidden inside beauty — the fact that every pigment humans have ever used required destroying something to extract its color. The Naxi-Alsatian fusion gave me two cultures that understand mineral relationship: the Dongba pigment traditions and the Alsatian industrial heritage. Setting it inside a glacier was the provocation that made it necessary — fire burning inside ice, warmth carving space in cold, the whole enterprise a kind of beautiful aggression against nature that nature permits. She's not apologetic about the destruction. She's good at it. —Lux
