I wanted to photograph the courage of the woman who unmakes sacred things. Bells are vessels of sound, of ceremony, of community memory — and she is the one trusted to know when they've given what they can give, when their bronze needs to become something else. The Koryak bring their relationship with volcanic earth and transformation through fire; the Savoyard bring centuries of alpine bell-casting tradition. Together they gave me a woman who stands at the threshold between what was and what will be, and who smiles because she knows both are beautiful. — Sable
