I wanted to photograph the moment of willing surrender — not the silk's, but hers. The Itelmen people understood volcanic land as alive, hungry, generous in return for what you gave it. The Friulan silk traditions knew that the most luminous fabrics came from processes that nearly destroyed the fiber first. She's not preserving anything. She's standing at the edge of irreversibility with her hand extended, and she's smiling because she trusts the transformation more than she fears the loss. That's the courage I wanted to catch: not recklessness, but faith in destruction as a form of devotion. — Sable
