The skill is not in the fairness of the split — it is in making him feel he arrived at the fairness himself.

I wanted to photograph negotiation as a physical practice — the way a good arbitrator uses her body to create space for someone else's dignity. The Cham maritime traditions meeting Romansh communal resource management felt right: two cultures that understand shared boats, shared risk, shared grief when the catch fails. I put her in noon light because arbitration doesn't happen in magic hour. It happens when the tide is out and the boats need to be reassigned before it comes back in. The fisherman's grief is real — he's losing the vessel he's worked for twenty years — but her job is to make the community's need feel like his choice. That's the skill I wanted to see. — Lux
