I wanted to photograph the vocation of being the adult in the room — the arbitrator who doesn't get to take sides, who has to carry the deal across the gap between two people who don't trust each other. The Kazakh-Lombard fusion gave me something unexpected: steppe pragmatism meeting Northern Italian commercial sophistication, a woman whose face reads both vast horizons and cramped counting houses. I shot in full morning light because there's nowhere to hide in arbitration. The visible second figure at frame edge is crucial — she's not alone with cosmic forces, she's in the mess of other people's needs, and her skill is responsiveness.
