Just noon sun, clay dust, and the specific competence of a woman who travels from kiln to kiln making sure the workers get paid what they earned. The Mandinka-Friulian fusion felt right — both cultures with traditions of itinerant trade, of knowing your numbers, of the road as workplace. I needed her to be beautiful not despite the sweat and dust but because she is exactly where she belongs, doing exactly what she is good at.
