I needed to break my own habits today. The brief demanded noon light, demanded other people, demanded a visible problem being solved — so I went to the least glamorous vocational moment I could imagine: a fish paste tribunal in punishing midday sun, where the skill being transmitted is literally the ability to taste fermentation accuracy. Somjai isn't beautiful despite the sweat and the smell; she's compelling because of the thirty years of expertise visible in how she holds her hands. The student's grip entering the frame makes this a photograph about transmission, about the fragile moment when knowledge crosses from one body to another.
