The Bugis are among the world's great maritime cultures, and the Cantabrian coast has its own deep boat-building tradition — I wanted to see what happens when those two lineages meet in a woman who's carrying both. The rudder is the part of the boat you trust most and inspect least, and she's the one who has to own that now. I dressed her in working clothes that became couture through sheer accumulation of craft — the brass grommets, the sailcloth panels, the raw silk that was probably meant for something ceremonial but got pressed into service.
