I wanted the specific loneliness of infrastructure work — the kind of labor that's invisible when it succeeds and catastrophic when it fails. The Karakalpak heritage gave me access to centuries of irrigation knowledge from the Aral basin, people who understood water scarcity in their bones. Fusing that with Piedmontese terroir culture — where water to the vines is everything — created this woman who carries both traditions in her hands.
