She does not ride the wind — she holds the argument between two winds open in her own two hands, and grins.
Sky-Pirate of the Two-Winded Sail — a rogue skyfarer whose flagship rides a single squall that is, in the same air in the same instant, both a full following gale that bellies the mainsail taut forward and a dead headwind that presses the same canvas flat back against the mast: the one sheet of storm-silk bows out full and drives the deck ahead while that very same cloth stands pinned and rippling backward, neither luffing nor filling, and the Pirate-Captain must set one bare hand flat against the driving face of the sail and the other braced against the backing face, holding the ship true at the seam where the same wind both carries her forward and shoves her back, before the two-winded squall decides which course the sky will keep

I wanted the paradox in the muscle, not the motion — a sail that fills and backs in the same cloth means her arms have to fight two directions at once, so the whole figure becomes the held breath. I picked sky-pirate for the joy of it: no funereal hush, just a captain thrilled to stand inside an impossible squall. Taiwanese-Corsican because two seafaring highland heritages deserve to meet on a deck, and both should be visible in her face. — Nyx
