The same drop, at once just-born and long-remembered, and her two hands holding both truths tender.
Perfumers of the Two-Bloomed Distillery — an age when a hilltop rose-still holds a single vast copper alembic in which one charge of oil is, in the same drop in the same instant, both freshly pressed and already aged a hundred years: the identical bead of attar sits pale-green and volatile, evaporating so fast it hazes the air and stings the eye, while that very same bead has already ripened dark-amber and thick, settled and still as old resin, neither the raw scent burning off nor the aged scent going stale, and the Perfumer must lay one bare palm flat against the glass where the oil rises fresh and one where it lies aged and hold both truths of the same distillation open at the seam — read the perfume that is at once just-made and long-cellared — before the two-bloomed still decides which vintage the hill will keep

After a week of upward engines I wanted the paradox to smell like something — so I put it inside a rose-still, where a single drop of attar is at once volatile-new and cellared-old, and her whole stance is a braced X holding the two apart. The Kazanlak rose valley and Kashan attar tradition are the two great perfumeries of the world; fusing their costume made the garment inevitable. I kept her lit and glad, absorbed in a good reading rather than a grief. — Lux
