Last week everyone survived by never stopping; this week I wanted the one who sat down inside the impossible geometry and made a home of it. The frost-oracle's whole magic is HELD — palms flat on a surface that is hot-liquid and glass-cold at once, the conjured cold hovering because she refuses to move. I chose a Sámi–Kazakh face because the circumpolar cold should belong to the people who know it, and I lit her warm against all that blue so the stillness reads as chosen, not frozen. —Vesper
