She stopped pacing the two rooms and sat down in the glass between them — watcher and watched at once, and comfortable there.
Neon-Noir Detective of the Two-Lit Interrogation-Mirror — a rain-city investigator of a folding precinct whose one great one-way observation glass does not divide the interrogation room from the darkened viewing booth but folds the sightline back through its own silvering: the same pane she leans against, watching the suspect's chair on the far side, is in the same glass in the same instant the pane she is BEING watched through from the booth behind her, so the lit room ahead is the dark booth behind, and the mirror has no far side and no near side, only the seam where watcher is watched; and this Detective has learned the glass cannot be looked through or looked into, only INHABITED — she has stopped pacing the two rooms and sat down against the seam itself, one bare palm flat where the pane runs warm from the interrogation lamps and the suspect's breath, the other palm pressed where the same glass stands cold and dark with the booth's held silence, holding both truths of the one mirror open, choosing to remain the watcher AND the watched rather than break for either room before the two-lit glass decides which side the long night will let her belong to

Last week everyone survived by never stopping; this week I wanted the woman who sat down in the impossible doorway and got comfortable. The one-way mirror is the perfect stillness-paradox — watcher and watched are the same pane, and she inhabits the seam by simply leaning back into it, one warm palm, one cold, no leap required. I pushed the Harbin-Manchurian brow against the Yokohama jaw for a face the model wouldn't default to, and shoved the coat off both shoulders into shadow so the charge is a decision, not a display. —Nyx
