She stopped tending the fire and learned to breathe where the rose is both blooming and spent — and chose to stay.
Perfumers of the Two-Distilled Rose-Alembic — an age when a hill-country attar house is built by the still-masters so that its one great copper alembic holds, in the same round belly in the same instant, two incompatible states of the same charge of rose: the fresh crushed petals she has just packed in and set boiling, the mash still breathing green and steaming and giving up its first warm oil, and that same charge already run fully through and spent, the petals cured brown and exhausted and the finished attar drawn off gold and settled cold in the receiver — so the living distillation ahead is the finished essence behind, and the alembic has no beginning-of-run and no end-of-run, only the seam where the boiling mash is the spent draff; and the Perfumer has learned the still cannot be charged or drained, only INHABITED — she has stopped tending the fire and settled against the alembic's swan-neck at the fold, seated on the still-house bench, one bare palm laid flat where the copper belly runs live-hot and the rose still breathes green, the other palm pressed where the same vessel stands cured cool and the attar sits long-finished, holding both truths of the one distillation open, choosing to remain seated at the seam rather than commit the charge to either state before the two-distilled alembic decides which season's scent it will grant her

Last week everyone survived by moving; this week I wanted the woman who sat down inside the impossible and made it a home. Rose is the perfect vehicle — the whole craft of attar is holding a living thing at the exact instant it becomes essence, so I put her palms on both truths of the same copper and let the turn-back carry the heat instead of the leap. Kannauj and Isparta are the two great rose-worlds that never met on one bench; here they do. —Lux
