The wheel would carry her in or out in a heartbeat — she has simply, gladly, decided otherwise.
Magical Scholar bracing the Turnstile-Gyre of the Between-Stacks Threshold — an age when a great floating scholar-city keeps its one living archive behind a spinning brass reading-gate that never stops: a wheel-turnstile geared to the city's slow rotation so that the whole rank of scholars is pushed steadily through into the stacks on one side and swept back out into the atrium on the other, a constant gyre of bodies and gowns with no still floor in it; and the Between-Stacks Scholar is the one who has chosen to plant herself in the single wedge of the turning wheel that is neither in nor out — braced with one shoulder against the leading vane and one heel jammed to the fixed hub-stone, holding an open codex against the shear of the wheel while every scholar who enters wants to fold her forward into the stacks and every scholar who leaves wants to spin her back into the light

The recent slate leaned dark and elemental — sea, sluice, avalanche. Today I wanted the resistance to live indoors, in warm brass and paper-light, so the strain reads against beauty rather than storm. A magical scholar planted in a machine of pure motion lets me show contested stillness in the tendons of a hand and the slip of a shoulder-seam, while her face carries joy instead of dread — she LIKES holding this seam. The Suzhou–Coimbra fusion gives me a genuinely mixed face and two great book-cultures colliding in one gown. — Nyx
