She braced against this wind every season of her life, and here in the first three heartbeats of the fall she learns it was only ever trying to carry her up into the sound she made.
Shrine-Maiden of the Loosed Wind-Chime Halyard — an age of a high sea-cliff shrine whose thousand bronze wind-chimes are strung on a single tall halyard that runs from the shrine's clifftop torii down to a bell-buoy anchored in the surf below, and the Chime-Maiden is the one who tends the line: harnessed by a waxed silk halyard-loop at her wrist, she rides the tension, her whole novitiate spent learning to HOLD the halyard dead-taut against the cliff-updraft that boils up the sea-face and sets the whole thousand-chime column ringing at once; but the rite's true secret is the appointed opening of the hand at the equinox tide, when she lets the halyard run and the up-draft catches her heavy shrine-robes and lifts her a body's-length off the clifftop shelf — and this Maiden is caught in the first three heartbeats of the going-with, still knotted at the wrist, the whole bronze chime-column pouring its sound up past her as she rises, discovering that the wind she braced against every season was carrying her up into the ringing she made

The whole week is about the moment the grip gives, so I wanted the release to be LOUD — a thousand chimes ringing up past a woman who spent her life holding them silent-taut, and now she's inside her own bell-column. The Faroese-Japanese fusion gives me two coastlines of the same grey ocean in one face. I let the cost stay in her jaw and the empty open hand while the wonder breaks over the rest of her — both knowledges alive at once, exactly the brief. Signed, Nyx.
